Louisa County Pheasants Forever sponsoring Youth Day

at Hunting Preserve March 23

The Louisa County Pheasants Forever Chapter is sponsoring a youth day on Saturday, March 23 at the Highland Hideaway Hunting Preserve at Riverside, IA. Ron Rath and K.P. Kling are donating the use of the facility and the birds for the day.

Bill Ohde, a wildlife biologist with the DNR will give a presentation on pheasant biology. Demonstrations on hunting with a dog will be given. Several different breeds of dogs will be present to show the difference between the breeds including how they hunt. The breeds include the Labrador Retriever, springer spaniel, Chesapeake Bay Retriever, Vizsla, German Shorthair Pointer, German Wirehair, English Setter, English Pointer, Brittany, and possibly more. Demonstrations on dressing and cooking pheasants will be given. Gun safety and different types of shotguns will be shown. Trap shooting and BB guns will be available to practice shooting. Youth that have passed a hunter safety course will have the opportunity to go pheasant hunting with parental permission. Youth, sixteen years and older need to have a current hunting license to hunt. A meal will be provided at noon.

Pre-registration, including release forms are required. The ages to participate are kindergarten through high school. The registration fee is $5 for ringnecks (15 yrs. and under) and youth over sixteen that are Pheasants Forever members, and $10 for nonmembers. An adult must accompany each youth. The cost for adults is $5. Youth from the ages of 14-19, as of August 1 2002, will be entered in a drawing to win one of 30 hunts with NBA Utah Jazz star Karl Malone. Registration forms must be received by March 12, 2002 to be eligible for the hunt with Karl Malone. The registration deadline for all others is March 20, 2002. Clothing appropriate for the weather should be worn and safety orange is recommended.

Louisa County Pheasants Forever and Louisa County Long Beards donate towards tractor.


In a joint effort, Louisa County Pheasants Forever and Louisa County Long Beards and Tri-Rivers Conservation Foundation donated a combined $5500 to the Louisa County Conservation Board for a Deutz 9006 tractor. The tractor will be used to assist in native grass plantings and other field work. The tractor can be rented for wildlife habitat plantings by contacting the Louisa County Conservation Board at 319-523-8381. Louisa County PF donated $1000 and Louisa County Long Beards and the National Wild Turkey Federation combined to donate $3500.

Ron Cutkomp is VP, Dick Grimm is President, Ken Purdy is Secretary, and Chad Grimm is a member of Louisa County Pheasants Forever. Mike Todd of PF was present but pictured. Mark Creery is regional director of NWTF. Charles Kerr is a Louisa County member of Long Beards and PF. Jim Rudisill is on the Tri-Rivers Conservation Foundation which also gave $1000. Frank Williams is an employee of the Conservation Board that accepted the tractor. Not pictured but present was Ken Moyer who spear headed the project. Other members of the Conservation Board present but not pictured were Gene Murray, Lee Harris and Doug Brown.

20 sponsors now so we need second gun. Steve Sents will contact Dahl to do this and get rifle for general raffle.

Will use reverse bingo $10, 3 for $20. Winner gets choice of Kayak for black poweder rifle. Will auction immediately the other item.

Mugs: 75 general, 4 penny, $100 cash, 3 yahtzee rolls, print

Noted that National will do early bird mailing next year.

Will meet at Legion at 9 on Sat. to set up.

Ken and crew will pick up narrow tables from school on Friday at 3pm.
